House structure, staff presence and how a school handles small conflicts say more about daily life than any facility list.
Every boarding school describes itself as a family. The useful question is how the community is actually organised.
Houses and staff
Who lives on site? How many adults are present in the evening? Are houses mixed by age, which tends to build mentoring, or grouped by year, which tends to build cohorts?
Handling difficulty
Ask how the school responded to a recent problem — homesickness, a friendship breakdown, an academic dip. The specificity of the answer is the signal.
Belonging
The best indicator on a visit is unstructured: watch how students speak to staff in a corridor when nobody is presenting.
