The role of university counselling at international schools

Good counselling starts two years before applications and is measured by fit, not by the length of an offer list.

University guidance is one of the clearest differences between international schools, and one of the hardest to assess from outside.

What strong counselling looks like

A named counsellor, a defined timeline beginning in the penultimate year, and experience across several national systems — UK, US, Swiss and EU applications each work differently.

Questions worth asking

How many students does each counsellor support? Which systems has the team placed students into in the past three years? How are subject choices coordinated with intended destinations?

A caution about lists

Published destination lists show where students went, not whether those places suited them. Ask instead how the school helps a student decide what they actually want.
